COMSATS Internet Services (CIS) was established in 1996 and soon became one of the leading Internet service providers of Pakistan. It served as a pioneer in launching an Internet backbone in a number of cities across the country. Currently, CIS has its presence in Faisalabad, Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, Rawalpindi and Sialkot and is providing excellent technical services to its large clientele in these major cities of Pakistan. These services include, Leased Line connectivity upto 2 Mbps, ISDN Internet upto 128 Kbps, DSL Broadband Internet upto 2 Mbps, Broadband Wireless Internet Service (WiFi), websites and portal development services, domain name registration and web-hosting services, LAN/WAN set-up and server configuration services, Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and various customized software based services. Currently, CIS is using a total bandwidth of 157 Mbps. There is a fibre backbone terminating at all its nodes with a ring deployment for redundancy. The clients of CIS include government organizations, foreign missions and UN agencies. It is providing a number of professional and basic training courses, including ‘CISCO Certified Network Professional’, ‘CISCO Certified Network Administrator’, ‘Microsoft Certified System Engineer’ as well as course for setting up ISPs on Linux operating system.
CIS has had an important role in the establishment of Pakistan’s first software technology park (STP) at Islamabad by designing the network, implementing standard operating procedures (SOPs) to run the park, providing one-window services to software companies housed at STP. Encouraged by its resounding success, CIS is going to construct an `Internet House’ in Islamabad, Pakistan, which will also serve as a technology park. The expertise developed by CIS is available on request to any member country of COMSATS that wishes to enhance its broadband Internet accessibility and services.
