INTRODUCTION

The scientific techniques developed in the last two decades have given sufficient control to scientists to grow nanoscale structures in the laboratory. The nano materials thus developed show unique properties due to large surface-to-volume ratio, and quantum-confinement effects. This has revitalized research for application of nano-materials in different areas of science and engineering, e.g., in solar cells, catalytic reactions, and biology. Energy and environment have become key issues of concern in recent years. There has been a surge to develop ways and means to produce environment-friendly energy resources, which calls for synthesizing materials for solar cells, fuel cells and catalytic reactions. In addition to this, nanomaterials are being employed to address environment-related issues, such as air and water pollution.

The widespread global implications of nanomaterials, potential benefits of nanomaterials-enabled technologies, and the challenges towards maximizing the risk free benefits, have aroused great stir among the scientific community. The exacerbating energy crises and environmental conditions of the developing world call for developing efficient means for energy resources and means for the remediation of environmental degradation.

The Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS), in collaboration with Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO), COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT) and Damascus University, Syria, is organizing an international Seminar on Nano-materials in Energy and Environment”, that would be held in Damascus, Syria, from 21st-23rd September, 2010. This ISESCO-COMSATS-CIIT-DU Seminar would bring together research scholars and engineers from various disciplines of nanotechnology to share their research output and nano-products developed. The emphasis of the conference is to use nanoscience and nanotechnology to address the socio-economic issues of developing countries.

KEY AREAS

The workshop would focus on the following key areas:

  • Fundamentals of Nano-science & Technology;
  • Synthesis and characterization of nano materials;
  • Solar cells;
  • Catalysis;
  • Fuel cells; and
  • Sensors.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The Seminar is aimed to:

  • Provide a platform for scientists, researchers, technologist and faculty members to update the recent developments in the field of nanoscience & nanotechnology;
  • Facilitate to network the scientists working in various disciplines to address common problems and share their research in application of nano-materials in energy and environment;
  • Create an awareness of the potential of nano-materials in these key areas;
  • Prepare a curriculum for undergraduate and graduate courses in Nanoscience and technology; and
  • Provide an opportunity to promote joint research and collaboration among scientific institutions, in general, and scientific community, nano-sciences in particular.

EXPECTED OUTCOME

  1. It is going to enhance awareness of the latest development in this new and emerging field and the knowledge of relevant capacities existing in Islamic Countries.
  2. It is expected that network of nano-technology (ICPSR thematic groups) will be strengthened and long-term joint proposals will be prepared in collaboration with two to three partners from different countries.
  3. The delibration of the meeting will be helpful to develop curricula in Islamic Countries for undergraduate and graduate programme in Nano-Science and Technology.

ABOUT COLLABORATING ORGANIZATIONS

ISESCO

The Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural organization (ISESCO) is one of the largest international organizations of Islamic Countries based in Rabat, Morocco. ISESCO aims at strengthening, promoting and consolidating cooperation among Islamic Countries in the fields of education, science, culture and communication, developing applied sciences and use of advanced technology within the framework of Islamic values and ideals, and contributing to the global efforts of world peace and security.
