| To fulfill its commitment of actively promoting and encouraging the activities of capacity-building in science, COMSATS partially sponsors the annual Khwarizmi International Award (KIA) every year. The program of Khwarizmi Awards was initiated by the Iranian Research Organization for Science and Technology (IROST), which is a leading R&D enterprise of Iran and which also is a Centre of Excellence of COMSATS. The Award program is meant to acknowledge the outstanding contributions of Muslim scientists to the advancement of science and technology. IROST proposed the creation of the Khwarizmi Award in memory of Abu Jafar Mohammad Ibn Mousa Khwarizmi, the great Iranian Mathematician and Astronomer (770-840 C.E).
Initially the Khwarizmi Award program was meant for Iranian nationals; however, subsequently from the fifth session of the Award program, the awards were bestowed upon Muslim scientists from other Muslim states. COMSATS and other organizations such as WIPO, UNESCO, IFIA, COMSTECH, TWAS, ISESCO and WAITRO contributed to the Awards from the 10th session of the program.
This Award is a genuine recognition of the efforts of researchers, innovators and inventors from both within Iran and all acrossthe world, and is a symbol of appreciation for their achievements and contributions in the realms of engineering, basic and social sciences, agriculture and arts. COMSATS has the privilege of being a regular sponsor of the first and second cash prizes of the Khawarizmi International Award.
